Summer Institute at URI

The Summer Institute at the University of Rhode Island is a four-week program on the Kingston campus that offers a non-credit course in Engineering and Business, along with immersion in English language and American culture.

Academics

Special Topics in Global Enterprise Management

This course introduces students to the fundamentals and advancements in entrepreneurship, business and society, lean system, and marketing. Students will be provided with hands-on experiences and visits to local businesses related to these topics. Students will take this course three hours a day, four days a week.

English Communication

The primary focus of this course is oral communication. Course content emphasizes an introduction to American culture and intercultural communication. Students build fluency in English by participating in oral discussions based on course readings and giving oral presentations on a variety of cultural topics. Additionally, students enhance intercultural awareness by reflecting on differences between America and their own country.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to the United States
  • Relationships in America
  • American Heritage
  • Education and Business in America

Accommodations

Students will reside on the University of Rhode Island campus. Meals will be provided on and off campus.


Cultural Excursions

While in Rhode Island, students will experience local attractions such as Newport, Block Island, and go kayaking. Students will also visit major cities and attractions in the United States:

  • Providence – visit Brown University, the RISD Art Museum and experience Waterfire
  • Boston – visit Harvard University, Faneuil Hall and get a tour of the city
  • New York City – visit Times Square, the Statue of Liberty and the Museum of Metropolitan Art
