The URI Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences received its public debut on Monday
The URI Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences received its public debut Monday with hundreds attending the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremonies.
The big turnout of dignitaries, students, university officials and faculty members and the general public easily overwhelmed the 300-seat auditorium in the new $59-million building.
Interest in URI’s newest building was generated in part by healthy doses of pre-publicity. On Jan. 23, the Providence Journal released a video on the center, http://www.projo.com/video/?nvid=324718 and on Sunday, Jan. 25 the newspaper featured a front page article on the building with a picture spread on the inside.

"With this new building, we are sending a message to biotech firms around the country that Rhode Island has the workforce to meet their needs. When Rhode Islanders approved my $50 million bond initiative to fund this project, they understood that biotech is the industry of the future. This building puts our state on the leading edge of educating and training those who can perform these high-wage, highly-skilled jobs.
The project is one of several biotech initiatives being pursued here. It will encourage more biotech firms to locate in our state and it will raise the level of research at URI.
