INTERNATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Any applicant who is currently studying in the United States on a student visa (F-1 or J-1) in high school, college or university is considered an International applicant.  If you intend to enter the United States with a student visa (F-1) you will be considered an International applicant.

 

Freshman application deadlines: 

Fall Semester:               February 1st

Spring Semester:           November 1st

First-year applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a completed application by February 1 for September admission and November 1 for January admission. 

A completed application includes the following:

  • $50 application fee

  • Official transcripts from Secondary school (must supply official certified copies of English translation)

  • SAT scores sent electronically (URI code: 3919)

  • TOEFL scores (if education is in a country whose native language is not English)

  • Recommendation letters (maximum of 2)

  • Personal statement

Outstanding freshmen candidates with minimum SAT scores of 1150 (Critical Reading & Math only) who rank in the top third of their class may be considered for a Centennial Scholarship ranging up to full tuition. The scholarships are renewable each semester if the student maintains continuous full-time enrollment and a 3.0 average or better. Eligibility requires a completed admission application received by the December 15th Early Action Deadline. Applications and information received after December 15th will not be considered. Students who present more than 23 college credits, excluding AP, are considered transfer applicants and are not eligible for Centennial Scholarship.


Test Requirements

Applicants for freshman undergraduate admission must complete the English and Mathematics Scholastic Assessment Tests (SAT) administered by the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB). Candidates must take these tests no later than the January preceding their anticipated September admission or June for January admission. This testing service is offered all over the world. Full information concerning the testing program and location of centers in the applicant’s country may be obtained from:

or may be available at certain US embassies and consulates. Candidates must also submit results of an English proficiency examination. The University prefers the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (213 minimum score). If it is impossible to take this test, the University will accept the Michigan Test.

 

Transfer Students

Transfer application deadlines:

                             Fall Semester:              May 1st

Transfer applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a completed application by May 1 for September admission and November 1 for January admission.

A complete application includes the following:

  • $50 application fee

  • Secondary school records (certified true copies) and official English translation (if not in English). All university or college transcripts (certified true copies) and official English translation (if not in English) along with course description or syllabus

  • TOEFL scores (if education is in a country whose native language is not English)

  • SAT scores required if you have fewer than 24 transferable credits and graduated from secondary school in the past three years (URI code: 3919)

A transfer applicant must arrange for their secondary schools, colleges or universities to mail original transcripts directly to URI.  URI does not accept copies which have been in the student's possession.  Final transcripts of all work in progress must be submitted immediately upon completion.  It is expected that such study will be concluded satisfactorily.

Candidates must prove their ability to use English and must meet the University’s academic requirements. Transfer applicants with one or more years of college-level study must have successfully completed their programs, including an English course.

Students transferring from other institutions in the United States should not withdraw to come to the University of Rhode Island until they have received a definite notice of acceptance, including the Certification of Eligibility (Forms I-20A-B, or DS-2019).  Within 30 days from their arrival students in F-1 or J-1 status must report to the Office of International Students and Scholars to register their passport, I-94, and visa documents.

URI does not accept credentials that have been in the possession of the candidate for admission.  Credentials must be evaluated by one of the following agencies if not sent directly from the secondary schools, colleges and universities attended.

Financial Aid

URI does not offer federal financial aid to international students. The Institute of International Education, 809 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY 10017, or the US Embassy or Consulate may be able to provide information about sources of monetary aid. Applicants from Africa (sub-Sahara) may get their credentials evaluated at the following African-American Institute offices: Accra, Ghana, PO Box 2192; Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. PO Box 2995; Lagos, Nigeria, PMB 2382; Lusaka, Zambia, PO Box 1631; Abidjan, Ivory Coast, BP 20894. Latin American applicants may apply at the Organization of American States, 17th St. and Constitution Ave, NW Washington, DC 20006.

All International students must show that they possess funds for their first year at the University and that funds for subsequent years will be available. If government or reserve bank permission is required to transfer funds from the student’s country to the U.S., a notarized copy of the permission is required. No financial assistance is available. (See estimated budget).

 

Advising Day

Attendance at advising day is compulsory for all new students. The reporting date is indicated on the Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or DS-2019)

 

Immigration

Accepted international students will receive immigration information from the University’s Office of International Students and Scholars after the enrollment deposit has been paid.

 

International Students and Scholars

The  Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars supervises the entire program for students and faculty members from other countries. The  director will answer inquires for additional information, assist new students in adjusting to the community and their academic programs. In addition the office is prepared to counsel on registration procedures, housing problems, visa regulations, personal, medical and financial affairs.

All international students must register their passport and visa information with the Office of International Students and Scholars immediately upon arrival in Kingston. They will be directed to the appropriate offices to complete housing, registration, and other necessary arrangements.

Undergraduate students in residence halls should plan to bring about $500 for bedding, rugs, lamps, and so on.
. Bank drafts clear in 4-6 weeks. Plan to bring adequate funds in travelers' checks (US dollars). This is extremely important, as no emergency funds are available to help students who run into financial difficulty.
