The University of Rhode Island's Academic Enhancement Center (AEC) is located on the 4th floor of Roosevelt Hall in University College. Its mission is an important one: to support academic achievement for students in all majors. The Academic Enhancement Center's motto, Teaching is Learning, reflects the belief that learning happens best when the learner is engaged in teaching subject matter to others. Students who visit the center (as well as those who work there) learn through actively sharing, questioning and applying learned concepts. The peer tutoring process, study groups, and other AEC services help develop greater authorship over learning.
The AEC offers one-to-one and small group tutoring by appointment and on a walk-in basis. The Center also organizes and facilitates study groups for students working in the same courses, and can provide study group materials to students and professors who wish to organize groups of their own. Additionally, Center staff work with individual students and with groups and organizations on a variety of study skills issues, and with faculty and staff to strengthen connections between classroom and lab learning and AEC services. At the AEC's main location in Eleanor Roosevelt Hall, students actively learn together in an attractive physical space well suited for studying, tutoring, and group meetings. In this interactive learning environment, students can relax with a cup of coffee, get help or help others with coursework, and find individual or group assistance as needed.
