CSI: Alton Jones
Ages 11-13
If you like the challenge of figuring out puzzles and
solving crimes while being part
of a small group learning community and helping the environment at the same
time, then this program is for you. Check-in is Sunday
between 2:00 and 3:00 PM. The program ends with a family
program Friday from 2:00-2:30 PM.

New for 2009, the goal of Crime Scene Investigators: Alton
Jones is to learn forensic science with a focus on solving
environmental crimes. There is also focus on working together as a team to solve
problems. The week will be spent learning and practicing
forensics and problem-solving throughout the Alton Jones
property.

The group will consist of a maximum of 12 campers, 2 Alton
Jones counselors or a counselor and a junior counselor. You
will sleep in the cabins with some campers who are in your
group and some who are in other themes, which will allow you
to get to know campers from outside your CSI group. You will
eat at the dining hall everyday. Sunday is devoted to meeting
and getting to know your cabin mates and your fellow CSI
junior detectives, junior counselors, and counselors. Sunday
night also includes an “all camp” camp fire so you will
meet and see all of the other campers and counselors who are
in Earth Camp for the week.
Monday morning will be the beginning of your career as a
junior detective. You will start with an induction ceremony
that will make you an official CSI: Alton Jones member. This
will also be the time when you will get your first look at the
crime lab, located in the main lodge and get an overview of
the week. You will finish up the morning by taking a swim test
in Lake Eisenhower, so be ready to get wet. On Monday
afternoon, you will be faced with your first crime you that
your team will have to solve. Before going out to the crime
scene, you will get a quick lesson in how to handle a crime
scene. You will then go out and collect evidence and bring it
back to the lab for analysis. But beware! Just like real
crimes, you will never know where the evidence will take you.
Monday night involves an all-camp activity and snack
before heading to the cabins for a good night’s sleep.

On
Tuesday morning, after a hearty breakfast, you will put on
your lab coats and head down to the crime lab to look at the
evidence that was collect the day before.
The first lab will involve hair vs. fur and organic vs.
inorganic material. After spending some time evaluating the
samples, there should be no question who has committed this
crime. Solve the
crime and put the criminal in jail. Tuesday afternoon, will be
spent apprehending another criminal who will have committed a
much more difficult crime to solve. Each day the crimes will
get a little more difficult and forcing you to use different
skills to solve the crime. Don’t worry, we are confident
that you will catch your criminal each time.

Wednesday morning, you and your group will get a lesson on how
to fingerprint, and test for blood type amongst other tasks
from a REAL CSI trained officer from a local police
department. We encourage you to pay close attention, because
the skills you learn from the officer will be needed to solve
the last crimes of the week.
Thursday
morning will be your “morning
off”, spent
swimming and learning to canoe.
But even these skills may yet come in handy.
The afternoon may just present the worst and most difficult
crime yet. Thursday night is a special dinner
followed by games and the closing campfire for all-camp.
Friday
morning after breakfast, you will be able to march the
criminals off to jail and the rest of time wrapping up the
experience you had during the week.
The rest of Friday is spent putting the whole week together
with reviews and wrap-ups plus closing activities. After lunch, there is some time to spend with friends new and
old before the family program begins. Sign out and goodbyes follow as the week comes to an end.
