W. Alton Jones Campus
Kayak Rhode Island
Ages 13-16

Although it is a small state, lakes, rivers, bays, and estuaries dot the Rhode Island landscape making it a perfect place to enjoy the sport of kayaking.  For this expedition, you will return to Alton Jones each evening for dinner, games, use of the bathhouse facilities, and to sleep at the Poor Farm Base Camp. (Note the difference: Kayak RI returns to Alton Jones to sleep each night while Kayak Adventure is a river expedition and each night is spent camping along the river.)

Sunday afternoon is spent checking in, settling in to your screen house, getting to know your fellow group members and leaders, and taking a swim test at the lake.  After eating a hot meal at the Poor Farm picnic area there will be an all-group orientation to the programs and some group time.  An all-expeditions game is followed by a campfire by the barn and bed time.

On Monday you will learn safety, paddle strokes, and exit and entry techniques at Lake Eisenhower.  You will review the routes and waterways that you will be exploring.  The rest of the week you will paddle a different Rhode Island waterway each day and return to Alton Jones at night.  The specific routes are still being planned, but they will include at least one day of river kayaking and one day of sea kayaking.  You may also explore some of Rhode Island's many coastal ponds and estuaries.  The week will also include swimming, games, and time to hang out with your new friends.

Each evening you will return to Alton Jones for dinner, games, use of the bathhouse facilities, and to sleep at the Poor Farm Base Camp.  You will stay in a screen house cabin with bunk beds and a bathhouse nearby with showers and flush toilets.  Some meals will be eaten at the camp dining hall and some will be prepared by your group.

In preparing for your week, you may want to spend some time thinking about why you chose Kayak RI and what you hope to learn from this experience.  Since kayaking requires constant use of the arms and upper body, upper body strength training will be a useful way to prepare for the week.  Everyone is expected to do their best, participate fully, encourage each other, and help out with chores on a rotating basis such as cooking and cleaning up.  If you have never kayaked before, relax. Experience is not a requirement, but a positive attitude and a willingness to have fun while learning is!
