W. Alton Jones Campus
Ocean State Odyssey
Ages 13-16

Experience the best of Rhode Island outdoors.  Although Rhode Island is small, it has a lot of outdoor adventure to offer.  The sandy coast is an ideal place kayak and surf.  Thousands of acres of state forest with picturesque trails provide miles of hiking opportunities.  A quality indoor rock gym and a number of outdoor cliffs suitable for climbing and rappelling offer many challenges.  Add to that the forests, fields, and ponds of the W. Alton Jones Campus, and you have the best of Rhode Island in one week!

Sunday afternoon is spent checking in, settling in to your screen house, getting to know your fellow group members and leaders, and taking a swim test at the lake.  After eating a hot meal at the Poor Farm picnic area there will be an all-group orientation to the programs and some group time.  An all-expeditions game is followed by a campfire by the barn and bed time.

Each day for the rest of the week is devoted to a different Rhode Island adventure.  Overcome group building challenges on our own low ropes challenge course, attend a rappelling workshop and climb at the Rhode Island Rock Gym, then scale a local cliff, head out to the bay for sea kayaking, get an introduction to surfing at one of RI's popular surfing beaches, and hit one of Rhode Island's most beautiful trails for a day hike.  Hike, swim, kayak, surf, rock climb, and rappel, all in Rhode Island.

Most evenings you will return to Alton Jones for dinner, games, use of the bathhouse facilities, and to sleep at the Poor Farm Base Camp.  You will stay in a screen house cabin with bunkbeds and a bathhouse nearby with showers and flush toilets.  One night may be spent camping off site.  Some meals will be eaten at the camp dining hall and some will be prepared by your group.

In preparing for your week, you may want to spend some time thinking about why you chose Ocean State Odyssey and what you hope to learn from this experience. Everyone is expected to do their best, participate fully, encourage each other, and help out with chores on a rotating basis such as cooking and cleaning up.  If you have never done some of the activities, relax. Experience is not a requirement, but a positive attitude and a willingness to have fun while learning is!
