Vermont
Rocks!
Green Mountain Multisport
For
Ages 14-17
Spend a week exploring the spectacular Green Mountains of
Vermont! This expedition to Vermont's Lake Dunmore
region features rock
climbing up Vermont's granite cliffs, hiking to a mountain
summit to take in the Vermont views, and going for a guided
trail ride on mountain bikes.
Vermont Rocks! is for ages 14-17. Two trained expedition leaders will lead a maximum of ten
participants on an expedition to scenic and rugged areas of
the Vermont’s Green Mountains. Professional Vermont guides will
accompany the group during the rock climbing and
mountain biking portions of the trip. This is an experience that integrates learning about
the environment and outdoor skills with the fun and challenge
of small group living.
Your expedition begins at the W. Alton Jones Campus where you
will spend Sunday night at the Teen Expeditions Poor Farm Base
Camp. During this time, you will have an orientation to
the rules, enjoy a cookout, play games and do activities that
will help you get to know your trip-mates. You will
learn more about the details of your trip and get all the
equipment and food ready to go. After an all-group
campfire, you will head off for a good night's sleep.
On Monday morning all of the preparations will be
complete and we will head to Vermont's Green Mountains, about a
5-hour drive.
Transportation throughout the week will be in a camp
authorized passenger van. Once we arrive at our
destination we will all help set up our base camp.
Camping will be at a Vermont state campground drive-in
campsite with restroom facilities and lake swimming. Our
campsite, tents and camp kitchen will be our home for the week. From
this base camp we will set out each day to learn new things
and enjoy the natural beauty of Vermont.
The Vermont Rocks! expedition will explore the Lake
Dunmore region of the Green Mountains of Vermont. This
region is known for its dairy farms, rolling mountains and
picturesque lakes. During our stay we will go rock climbing at
the Falls of Luna Recreation Area, go for an all day-hike in the
Bread Loaf Mountain Preserve,
and mountain bike on trails that will be chosen by our biking
guides based on our ability as a group. These
professional guides will teach us the basic skills of
rock climbing and mountain biking before we put our
skills to use. There will also be time for swimming,
games, and relaxing around the campsite.
At the end of each day we will return to our base
camp. All participants will help with cooking and cleaning up. While camping in the Green Mountains we will practice
concentrated impact camping techniques at the Vermont State
Park campground and other areas that we visit. This involves camping,
hiking, climbing, and biking in a manner that will
preserve the beauty of the areas. To do this we carry out all of our trash, cleanup our
campsite each night, and respect the
natural inhabitants. As we travel through these pristine regions, it is important to
be aware that many of these areas are remote and will be outside the
range of your leaders' cell phone signals.
Participants of the Vermont Rocks! Expedition should be in
reasonably good physical condition that will enable you to
hike, bike, and climb. The hike in the Green Mountains will last all day (with adequate
breaks for food, water and rest) and will have some steep
climbs so endurance is important. If you are unsure of
your physical condition, do some exercising before the trip.
Bike riding, jogging, swimming, push-ups, sit-ups, and lots of
brisk walking are some good ways to get muscles in shape and
build stamina. All participants are expected to
cooperate with fellow group members and leaders and abide by
all safety rules.

In preparing for the expedition, you may want to spend some
time thinking about why you have chosen this trip and what you
hope to learn from your Vermont Rocks! adventure. All participants
should have adequate previous experience riding a bicycle but
if you have never been climbing before, relax. Experience is
not a requirement, but a positive attitude and a willingness
to have fun while learning is!
