W. Alton Jones Campus

School program Field Teacher/Naturalists are hired for their experience working with children, interest in teaching youth about the environment, positive attitude, and willingness to take initiative. All are college graduates, some are certified teachers, and they all share enthusiasm for teaching children outdoors.  Often several staff members are international, generally from Europe, Canada, or South America.

With an average staff to student ratio of one to 12 students, we can help you meet a variety of educational objectives.  While Field Teachers have the freedom to teach the material in their own creative way, they are all trained to cover the same goals, objectives, and concepts laid out for each lesson.  That way you can be assured that students with different Field Teachers have been exposed to the same material.

Student safety is the highest priority.  Criminal Background Checks are just one part of the multi-step hiring process.  Each Field Teacher holds CPR and First Aid certifications and carries a first aid kit and a Nextel radio/phone for communication.  When children are in residence a registered nurse is on site part-time each day and on call 24 hours a day.  West Greenwich Rescue located 3.5 miles from the Environmental Education Center provides emergency transportation when needed to Kent Hospital in Warwick or Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence.  Our support staff—cooks, cooks helpers, custodians, maintenance, office staff and nurse—work year round to insure the safety and quality of our programs.
