The Fine Arts Center Galleries, University of Rhode Island, are an active kunsthalle, rather than a collecting institution. Comprised of three public exhibition areas (Main, Corridor, and Photography spaces), the Galleries annually present a changing program of contemporary art to stimulate the understanding and interpretation of art in its evolving visual expressions.
The Galleries have as their purpose enriching the creative, curricular, and cultural life of the University of Rhode Island community and the general public of Rhode Island and southern New England. The Galleries are an educational resource through display, publication, and programming as they strive to promote the understanding of art as an integral component of the humanities.
The University of Rhode Island is in the historic village of Kingston, 30 miles south of Providence, Rhode Island, and within easy drive of New York City (99 mi. or 160 km.) and Boston (47 mi. or 75 km.). Kingston is a regular stop on the Amtrak line connecting Boston to Washington, D.C.

An active contemporary art exhibition program is presented annually within each of the Galleries' public exhibition areas—Main Gallery, Corridor Gallery, Photography Gallery. Unique among university galleries in the northeast, all Fine Arts Center Galleries' exhibitions are generated internally from a national palette of artists, rather than traveling to the university from organizing/sponsoring institutions elsewhere. This policy makes gallery programming exceptionally responsive to interests of the immediate academic community. Exhibitions have been devoted to contemporary art in all media, with increasing emphasis on multi- and cross-cultural dialogue. Annual calendars seek a balance between nationally, internationally-recognized and emerging artists, through one-person, two-person and thematic group exhibitions of various types.
Complementary programming accompanies each exhibition. Illustrated exhibition brochures and catalogues, as well as frequent guest lectures and exhibiting artist's talks in galleries attest to an educational mission concerned with varieties of visitor outreach.
All three galleries are located in the Fine Arts Center building on the main campus roadway, Upper College Road. Visitor parking is available through the Visitor Information Center located at the entrance to the campus.
Admission is free. Donations are greatly appreciated.
