URI Highlights Presidential Art Collection

Senior Seminar in Kingston and Providence

Please join us in Providence or Kingston for the University of Rhode Island 2009 Senior Seminar Exhibition featuring mixed-media, printwork, photography, painting, and audiovisualism. The Providence reception will be held on December 3 from 6pm to 8pm at Gallery Z. The Kingston reception will be held on December 10 from 4pm to 6pm in the Main Gallery of the Fine Arts Center.

On Tuesday, November 3rd, Vice President Robert Weygand awarded first, second, and third place awards to students participating in the student art exhibit. The winners and their works are now also available in a gallery online.

Computer Lab Show November 4

Sarina Khan Reddy, one of the four India artists, will be presenting her work on Wednesday, November 4th, at 11am in the department computer lab. The presentation is open to all interested students and faculty.

Students to be Awarded in Carlotti Gallery November 3

The Fall 2009 student art exhibit is officially on display and open to the public in the Carlotti Gallery between 9am and 4pm. Please join us on Tuesday, November 3rd at 3:30pm for a reception acknowledging each participating student. A&AH Announces $500 Holiday Card Design Competition

President Dooley has offered to host a design competition for URI students in Art and Art History. A panel of art faculty will pick three finalists, then David Dooley and Lynn Baker-Dooley will make the final choice of the winner. Winifred Brownell, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will select a second place winner. Any media is accepted. Students are encouraged to fill out the form online.

College Information Session November 16

Mobile Art Project to Visit A&AH October 22

Viera Levitt, independent curator, and Hera Gallery in Wakefield will set up the Mobile Art Project outside the Fine Arts building on the Kingston campus on Thursday, October 22, from 12 to 5 pm. The entire university is invited to explore a sound installation created in part for Save The Bay. Admission is free.

Faculty, Alumni, Student Works Unveiled at President's House

On October 16th, over thirty works of art will be unveiled at a private gathering in URI President David Dooley's campus home in Kingston, RI. Professor O'Malley To Show Work at Wheeler

The Chazan Gallery at Wheeler will be showing the works of Brian O'Malley, Clara Lieu, Eric Sung, and Julie Gearean in a group show titled "Where Are We?". Hasan Elahi to Visit Department of Art & Art History

Hasan Elahi's work has been presented in numerous exhibitions at venues such as the Centre Georges Pompidou, Sundance Film Festival, Kassel Kulturbahnhof, The Hermitage, and at the Venice Biennale. Elahi will give a presentation that will be open to the public on October 12, 2009, from 3:30 to 4:45pm in Lippitt Hall, Room 402 on the Kingston campus. For more information, please call 874-5821.

Professor Ron Onorato Featured in South County Independent

Professor Onorato helped lead a team of historians searching for evidence of South Kingstown's Quaker Meeting House, reportedly destroyed over 200 years ago. SC Independent: "Doing both measuring and digging were members of Onorato's American Art History class. Cory Redinger, 22, of Exeter and Tiffany Wesson, 21, of East Greenwich handled much of the digging and sifting at the test pit, while classmates Jason Curzake of Wakefield and Marina Hojnacki of Connecticut measured gravestones." Department of Art & Art History Unveils New Website

As part of an ongoing technology initiative, the Department of Art & Art History has unveiled a new website today. The site incorporates Facebook groups and online galleries. Department Chair Bob Dilworth approved the new site late last week.

Main Gallery Hosts 'Passages' Installation by Barbara Pagh

Part of a series of exhibitions, it is based on megalithic structures that were erected in ancient Ireland and consists of handmade paper and printmaking combinations. The Italo Scanga Visiting Artist Fund was established with a donation from A&AH alumna Katherine Scanga and the Italo Scanga Foundation. Italo Scanga was an internationally renowned sculptor who taught at the University of Rhode Island.
