COM310-6: Book Review 1—The Geography of Nowhere, by James Kunstler

(COM310 syllabus) | (grading) | (further reading)

Assignment: Read James H. Kunstler's The Geography of Nowhere. In a short critique and review, state Kunstler's primary theses, citing brief passages directly or indirectly to illustrate. Discuss Kunstler's views in light of your own experiences or observations. Given that the process of suburban sprawl has largely taken place over the last 60 years, outline briefly any changes that society must make to overcome the problems implied by Kunstler's pejorative"nowhere," and state your view of the time span over which these changes should take place (and why this span).

In parallel with this assignment, reflect on your reading and critique in your journal, emphasizing the most direct personal implications of this work (e.g., would this book influence your decision to seek a house in the suburbs?).

Format: This review should be a minimum of 2 to 3 pages long, printed, double spaced, 10-12pt font, 1" margins. Make certain that you have proofread and that the final copy contains no typos or grammatical errors.

Due: Submit in class on 9/18.
