WRT333
Defining Yourself
Given Sep. 7 | Due Sep. 9
Purpose: To assist Dr. Logan in getting to know you; to set expectations for your assignments to come.
Instructions: Review notes on genus-differentia. Then, write two concise paragraphs.
- Genus: Write a first paragraph describing yourself as a member of a group—any group you choose. State clearly which group (this is your genus). (examples: democrats, feminists, computer scientists, buddhists). Concisely clarify just what it is about you that makes you a member of this group.
Your audience is your professor, Dr. Logan. Your primary purpose is to introduce yourself in a semi-formal and scholarly way. - Differentia: Write a second paragraph to make it clear how you see yourself as distinct within the group. Be clear and precise (you are differentiating yourself, standing out from others in the group). (examples: blue-dog democrats, radical vegan feminists, forsensic computer scientists, Vipassana Buddhists)
Format: Submit your response, printed on a single sheet of paper, with .75 to 1 inch margins all around, using a 10-12 point standard font (e.g., Times Roman). Double space so that the page may be edited by Dr. Logan. At the top of the page, write WRT333 and your section, your name, and the title of this assignment ("Defining Yourself / Myself").
Proofread carefully. Spell check. Double check your punctuation. Edit any sentences that are not clear and concise. Everything you write should be well written.
How will this assignment be graded? This assignment is worth 5% of your final grade, as follows:
- Did you respond with the appropriate content? (Do I think you are giving this some thought? Do I think you have read and made a good faith effort to follow the instructions?) (2%)
- Did you format as instructed? (1%)
- Did you use the headings at the top of the page as instructed? (1%)
- Did you hand the assignment in on time? (1%)
That's it. Simple, no?
