            Welcome to Com 310K, Rhetoric of the Civil Rights Movement.  This course is designed with the following goals in mind:  First, the critical gathering, assessment, and contextualization of the key rhetorics of the American civil rights movement.  Second, the rhetorical analysis of ceertain speeches and other civil rights discourses.  Third, the examination of the interaction between civil rights, democratic society and the rhetorical

Process.

 

ASSIGNMENTS

 

1.                    Report on Frederick Douglas – Select one of Douglas’s speeches and research

The historical social and political times during which the speech was first

Given.  Use at least three references.  Title page and reference page  included in           

This five page work.     (25% of total grade) Due Date  Feb 26th

 

2.                    Report on Brown vs. Board of Education – Locate one court argument of this

Landmark case.  Research who argued the case, the date of the case and explain

The essential premises of the argument.  (20% of total grade) Due Mar 28th

 

3.                  Oral History of the Civil Rights Period – Interview at least one person who

Lived during the civil rights movement here in America.  Write up your

Interview (about 3 pages typed) and present your findings in oral report

To class.  (20% of total grade)  Due Apr 9th

 

4.                  Final Examination (20% of total grade)

5.                    Class participation and attendance (More than 3 unexcused absences

Will adversely effect your grade.)  (15% of total grade)
