Com491B--Digital Portfolio
Dr. Wood x4030, email DocWood@uri.edu Office hours: by appointment
The purpose of this one-credit class is to put your undergraduate education into perspective via an electronic portfolio. Further, a version of this portfolio can be adapted for use as an employment CD-Resume or Web-based resume. As, such, we expect the portfolios to be creative and in part show off your abilities to communicate via computer generated modes. Thus, we will be working with programs designed to maximize your computer presentation of yourself: such as PowerPoint. No prior experience with PowerPoint is necessary. Other programs and equipment will be utilized as appropriate.
The class time will be spent talking about the processes involved in the class and time set aside for actually working on computers to assemble the digital portfolio. We will be using guest speakers to help us understand resumes, audio and video clips, creating your own web page, how to use Power Point including animation. As such, your attendance is expected.
Grading: There are only two components to your final grade: (1) your final portfolio (two versions, both submitted on CD, which will be presented formally to the class at the end of the semester) and your semester participation (based on attendance, willingness to help facilitate the class, and willingness to push the envelop of your own experience and abilities). So, 50% of your grades is based on effort, and the other 50% is based on results.
Text: There is no required text for this course, but readings from the web and self-help books will be expected.
Tests: None, see grading above.
The schedule will remain flexible especially as we line up guest speakers and accommodate their schedules. However during the first several weeks, students should go on-line and study the resume & interviewing sites and gather materials that will be used in the portfolios.
