Graduate Student Internship Available

 

The National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, offers paid 6-month internships in the areas of health communications and science writing. These internships provide students who are completing their Master's degree or Ph.D. with an opportunity to be a part of vital health and science communications projects.

 

Students with backgrounds in public health, health education, science, biostatistics, epidemiology, communications, marketing, public relations, news writing and/or science writing are urged to apply.

 

Eligibility:  Internships are open to U.S. citizens who are currently enrolled in a graduate school program and wish to pursue an internship prior to completing the requirements for a Master's degree or Ph.D. Students are not required to obtain academic credit in order to be eligible.

 

Job Descriptions:  Health Communications

Requires experience or background in public health, health education, biostatistics, epidemiology, communications, marketing, public relations, and/or science writing.

 

Tasks:

*          Plan, develop, and promote cancer education programs and materials (including Web-based) for the public, cancer patients, and health professionals

*          Pre-test and evaluate cancer prevention and treatment messages, materials, and programs that reach the American public

*            Participate in professional meetings and training seminars Science Writing Requires a science background plus experience in public relations and/or news writing with the ability to translate technical information into copy suitable for a lay audience.

Tasks:

*          Write bylined news and feature articles for the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and NCI Web site *    Write fact sheets and press releases *            Answer inquiries from the press

*          Attend and report on scientific meetings

*            Participate in professional meetings and training seminars

Stipends and Benefits Interns receive a monthly training stipend based on relevant work experience and undergraduate grade point average. Health insurance is provided and a limited public transportation subsidy is available. Interns also receive four hours of vacation time every two weeks.

 

Deadlines:

*          April 1 for the July through December session

*            October 1 for the January through June session

            A letter of nomination from your graduate-school dean or director specifying your status within your graduate program and your expected date of graduation.

            A letter of recommendation from a professor, advisor, or professional associate.

            Official transcripts of all completed graduate courses and a final undergraduate transcript(s). The required minimum undergraduate GPA is 2.75.

 

            Work samples including clips, papers, or publications. Please do not send originals, as they will not be returned.
