Research interests: I have several research interests. The primary area approaches cultural competence and divergence in interpersonal communication. I have taught in this area in clinical interactions between members of "professional helpers" and children and their families when significant misunderstandings lead to unfortunate outcomes. One of the best examples I can offer is the text by Anne Fadiman, "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctor, and the Collision of Two Cultures. A second area of research examines the perpetuation of violence and hate speech, especially as expressed toward women, people of color, and gay, Lesbian, bisexual and transgendered individuals. The third area is examining 'healing dialogues', i.e., alternatives to destructive confrontations and ill will, by self-identification, self-awareness and respect for each person's valid stories of life experiences. Stephen Grubman-Black joined the Department in 1972, and took some different journeys over the years at URI. Returning to the Communication Studies Department is very exciting and intellectually stimulating for him. He is fond of his colleagues, and intends to maintain the high level of teaching expectations, a legacy for our students. |
