The Public Relations Major

Getting Started

The Public Relations Major is an interdisciplinary program emphasizing a liberal arts education coupled with skills strategic for a successful career. As this career path continues to evolve, it is critical students are submerged in an array of courses, such as journalism, marketing, writing and communication.

Use the PR Major's Worksheet as a guide to help you choose courses and electives.

Students can declare their major when they enter URI. Also, students can declare their Major while enrolled in University College. Please note that acceptance into the Major in the College of Arts & Sciences is by application. Based on QPA, the top 25 applicants are admitted annually. Applicants must have a minimum QPA of 2.0 overall and 2.5 in the pre-major courses.

Application Process

Students interested in the Public Relations Major are invited to apply to this program in January of each year. The application is submitted to Regina Bell for review. Students accepted will be informed by phone and will receive an official letter of acceptance from Dr. Derbyshire, Chairperson of Communication Studies.

  • Take pre-major courses during your first three semesters
  • Be aware of prerequisites for required courses
  • Be serious about your studies and your future career
  • Meet regularly with your advisor

You have been accepted into the program - What's next?

Students will enroll in Public Relations Strategies (PRS340) offered in the Fall and will be provided with a permission number. Students will enroll in Public Relations Practices (PRS441) offered in the spring. Students will participate in the required internship allowing them to utilize and strengthen the skills garnered during their course of study.
