Hey everyone! My name is Phyllis and I’m a junior here at the University of Rhode Island double majoring in Public Relations and Communications Studies. Let me start off by congratulating everyone on picking the best major/ minor this university has to offer—Public Relations! The Harrington School of Communication and Media is going to open many doors for you during your four years, as well as after graduation.
Regina Bell is your advisor on campus, but my goal is for all public majors and minors who need questions asked to use this blog to help them find the answers.
This semester I will be updating this blog to help out everyone within the major/minor with a few pointers on how to make the best out of the opportunities this major can give you. You can expect to find tips on internships, résumés, and cover letters. I will also discuss the different possible career paths your degree can lead you in. Also, I will describe the courses that best suit the major and how to use what you learn in class in real life experiences in the public relations field. Social media is an important tool used by businesses. I will be teaching you ways to properly use these sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, to help expand a company’s public relations. Lastly, I will be updating all of you on what different public relations courses are doing in class that are helping them prepare for real-life experiences.
I hope everyone will find this blog beneficial and use it as a resource as the semester goes along. If anyone has any questions, concerns, or something they want me to post about, please contact me at phyllis_francis@my.uri.edu.
