The Public Relations Summits

Now in its Fifth Year...

Designed as a professional development opportunity, students participating in the PR Summit meet leaders in the Public Relations industry here in Rhode Island. Informal in approach, the Summit allows students to converse with the leaders about the many facets of the Public Relations industry. To date, several students have participated in internships as a result of the PR Summit.

All students and faculty are invited to attend the Summit held at the Alumni Center.

What's happening in the Fall of 2012?

What's different this semester?  Students participating in the Public Relations Summits will get out into the community.  Our first stop is the Jonnycake Center in Peace Dale, RI.  Approaching its 40th anniversary, the Jonnycake Center provides an invaluable array of services to the local community.  From a food pantry offering healthy choices to clothes and furniture, the Jonnycake Center has made an impression in the South County community.  Public Relations students will roll up their sleeves in assisting this organization plans its 40th anniversary celebration. Stay tuned for additional details.

Our next stop is (add)ventures in Providence.  Public Relations alum Dominic Green, Class of 2010, and currently the manager of content branding at (add)ventures will lead this fascinating visit to this remarkably out-of-the-box PR/Marketing/Advertising agency..  Recognized for innovation, creativity and its contribution to the community, a visit to (add)ventures will prove to be a memorable experience.

PR Summit: A Glance Back at Spring, 2012

We greeted the spring semester with a welcome by Renee Hobbs, Ph.D., Founding Director of the Harrington School of Communication & Media.  Renee shared her vision for the Harrington School and emphasized the critical need for a creative, multipronged campaign to advance the School.  What a great way to start the semester!

In keeping with the theme of PRS441 (PR Campaigns), Christopher Medici,
Executive Vice President, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications at the United Way of Rhode Island shared not only his expertise but his passion for Public Relations.  Chris shared specific strategies necessary for any successful PR campaign.

We delved into the world of nonprofits, thanks to Meghan Grady, Chief Operating Officer at YWCA Northern Rhode Island.  With an accomplished career in public service and politics, Meghan revealed possible approaches the students could consider when pursuing their careers.  From practical interviewing tips to networking, Meghan added value to our semester.

This semester, we were so fortunate to have two recent grads of the Public Relations Program share their words of wisdom.  Many thanks to Kevin Colman,  Development Associate at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Mary Kate Winter, Account Manager at NAIL Communication.  Mary Kate and Kevin are 2011 Public Relations graduates of URI.  Immediately following graduation, they both secured their current full-time positions within Public Relations.  Both Mary Kate and Kevin attribute their success to meaningful internships.
