So far, we're having a great semester at the movies. Now it's time to
pull it all together. You have written on a variety of films with
different stories and various economic themes wrapped in a variety of
cinematic styles. Now it is time to focus those insights to find a
theme that runs through all of the movies up to and including Fried
Green Tomatoes. For your midterm paper, which is now due on March
24th not March 5th, you are to select a theme which you see as
important and address how each movie sheds some light on that theme.
Clearly we expect you to address this from both the perspectives of
Economics and Film Studies. The economics is the story and informs
the theme. The film contributes to the telling of the story. So you
will look at how one supports or is inextricably bound to the other.
There will not be individual written assignments for David
Copperfield, Wall Street or Fried Green Tomatoes. We'll work on
those films in some discussion and exercises but you'll address them
in this paper along with the other film we have viewed to date.
The paper should be substantive and employ correct grammar and syntax, demonstrate careful editing and proofing, follow a logical discussion of the identified theme, include clear examples drawn from the films, list complete citations of any external sources and take some intellectual risks. Length? Do the job to your satisfaction but somewhat more than 5 pages and fewer than 12 seems reasonable. Be orgainized and succinct because your quality will not be improved by inflated quantity.
Yes, this means that there is no assignment as stated in the
syllabus-Paper Due: Analysis Fried Green Tomatoes on March 24.
