March 31 Power of One
Below is a list of URLs which will give you a start as you prepare for
next Mondays discussion related to A Power of One. In the US, there is
an indisputable history and present day evidence of racism. One way in which
the U.S. has dealt with racism is through affirmative action. The task is to
explore what event/s initiated affirmative action and what is its cost. Divide
yourselves into two groups. One side is responsible for arguing for affirmative
action and the other against. Both groups should build cost into their argument.
As you prepare your argument, be aware that you should demonstrate an awareness
of the history of affirmative action in this country, e.g. the Bakke case, the
recent U. of Michigan case and the economics of affirmative action that includes
the demographics, and the uniqueness of the problem to the U.S. Divide the tasks
and readings up among your group. Be efficient and this won't be a killer. You
will have 30 minutes to prepare your groups side of the debate at the
top of the class. Just do your homework on your side and be prepared to share
equal responsibility for carrying the argument. We will also use some time to
discuss the use of on-location shooting in film.
