Welcome to MGT639C
Business Communication and The Internet

Getting Started

Your registration for the online materials for the course are in process. Below are instructions for logging on to WebCT. If you cannot log in immediately, it is because the Network Administrator has not yet had the opportunity to register your WebCT ID.

When you enrolled in the course you automatically received a URI Network ID; your WebCT ID is identical. It consists of--

1. The first letter of your first name (UPPERCASE ONLY) Example: JANE SMYTHE
2. The first three letters of your last name (no apostrophes or hyphens - UPPERCASE ONLY) Example: JANE SMYTHE
3. The last four numbers of your Social Security number Example: 111-22-3333

The network ID for the example above should then be JSMY3333. You should now be able to figure out your own network ID.

Your initial logon password should be your date of birth in the format MMDDYYYY, This means that you must enter the month and the day in two-digit representation. Months must be represented as January = 01, February = 02, March = 03...; days must be represented in the same way - 01, 02, 03... 29, 30, 31. The year must be represented with all four digits, 1966, 1967... 1975... 1981. If Jane Smith's date of birth is May 23, 1977, her initial login password would be 05231977. If this password doesn't work, try using the password 00000000.

If for some reason you registered with and are using a URI etal account (you'll know it if you are), use that network ID and that password.

If the password does not work, or, if you don't remember your password, fill out a WebCT ID Password Change Request form.

As soon as you successfully logon to WebCT, one of the first thing you should do is change your password. You will see a link to do this at the top right of the course selection page.

Once into MGT639C, you can just click either on icons or items on the navigation bar and get around in the course.

A couple of notes about browsers:

The College of Business Administration has a helpful page (http://www.cba.uri.edu/webct/browserSettings.asp) on this subject that you might like to visit.

You should use Netscape version 4.x - 7 (however, do NOT use version 6 as it works very very slowly) or Microsoft Internet Explorer (however, do NOT use version 5.5 as it has problems doing uploads which you need to hand in work). See below for download links.

If you use Americal Online (AOL) to connect to the Internet, you will find that you cannot use the built-in AOL web browser for WebCT work. It is a simple matter to use other browsers in conjunction with your AOL account (or any other commercial service for that matter). Once you have logged onto AOL (or whatever service you use), just launch Netscape or Internet Explorer at the same time; they will use the already established dial-up connection.

A peculiarity about some versions of some browsers: If you click on an icon and nothing seems to happen, hold down the mouse key until a dialog box appears and gives you the choice to open the link. If you find this to be the case and think this extra step is not worth it, you should consider changing browsers or upgrading to a newer version

If you do not already have Netscape or Internet Explorer, click on the links below to obtain free downloads. Follow the links to downloads and be sure to read the System Requirements so you get the version of the browser that is right for your system.
