Open Positions—Fall 2008

PART-TIME POSITIONS:

The following part-time teaching positions are open in the College of Arts & Sciences for the Fall 2008 semester only, but continuation is possible depending on curricular needs and funding. These positions will be available until filled. The Fall 2008 semester begins on September 3rd and ends on December 19th. If you are interested in any of the following positions, you should contact the person indicated.

ECONOMICS 201, Principles of Microeconomics. This course is an introduction to microeconomics taught primarily to freshmen and sophomores. Kingston course with 35-40 students. Qualifications: M.A. in Economics or closely related discipline and college-level teaching experience. Send CV and letter of interest to Professor Glen Ramsay, Chair of Economics, ramsay@uri.edu.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES. Adjunct positions available in French, Italian and Spanish. Classes meet on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule. Duties: teach basic language courses. Qualifications: at least a bachelor's degree in the language; teaching experience a must. PHILOSOPHY 212, Ethics. This course is an introduction to ethical theory. It consists of an examination of major ethical theories, and the application of moral reasoning to topics such as virtues and vices, human dignity, conscience, responsibility, moral dilemmas, and reasons to be moral. Kingston class available MWF 4:00–4:50. 35 students. Qualifications: Ph.D. or ABD in Philosophy or closely related field, and prior teaching experience preferred. PHILOSOPHY 314, Ethical Problems in Society and Medicine. This course consists of ethical analyses of topics such as war, capital punishment, sexual morality, suicide, animal rights, honesty and deception, world hunger, discrimination, abortion. Providence class available W 9:00–11:45. 25 students. Qualifications: Ph.D. or ABD in Philosophy or closely related field, and prior teaching experience preferred. POLITICAL SCIENCE 369, Legislative Process and Public Policy. This course covers the structure and functions of congress analyzed in relation to its role in determining public policy. Kingston class available T/Th 12:30 -1:45. 35 students. Qualifications: Ph.D. in political science or closely related field. Prior teaching experience preferred. SOCIOLOGY 212, Families in Society. This course examines the role of families in maintaining and changing society. It emphasizes demographic and historical changes in family life, the diversity of family structures, and connections between the family and the political economy. Kingston section open, T/TH 11:00-12:15, 35 students. Qualifications: MA or PhD in sociology. Teaching/research emphasis on the family preferred. WOMEN’S STUDIES 301, Women’s Professional Development and Leadership. This course examines the theory and practice of women’s professional development and leadership in a variety of organizational contexts. Topics include gender issues in organizational settings, developing professional skills and responses to challenges in the workplace, and strategies for positive change. The course will be taught entirely online. 20 students. Qualifications: MA in Women’s Studies, Economics, Sociology, or related field or equivalent professional experience. Computer skills a must. WRITING 104, 106, and 227. First-year writing (expository and research) and business writing. 24 students. MWF and TR sections. M.A. in relevant field and teaching experience required.
