Admiral Zheng was given control of the Chinese navy during the Ming dynasty during the years 1405-1433, a period in which the Chinese ruled the Indian Ocean. Some of the Admiral's ships were the Treasure ships that could have reached 400 ft in length, substantially longer than the ships of Christopher columbus that were 55 feet. The Chinese navy was designed to spread the influence of China, control trade and the tributory system that brought funds into Chnia's treasury. In one of the more important, but poorly understood decisions, in 1435 the Treasure fleets were scrapped as China turned inward, leaving the Indian Ocean open for those western explorers that would soon be appearing.
