Government publications are an invaluable source of data and may be found in depository libraries around the nation.   The University Library in Kingston, The Providence Public Library, and the Rockefeller Library at Brown University are full depository libraries.  Much, but not all, of this data is also available on the Internet.

Your assignment is to wander around the stacks in "Gov Pubs" and find interesting data with which to produce (not photocopy) examples of the following graphs:

Pie

Bar

Side by side column

Area

Scatter

Volume-Hi-Lo-Close (you may use non gov pub data for this one.)

Each graph must be used in an appropriate context, with the data source clearly indicated.  Each graph must be accompanied by an explanatory paragraph.

As you work on this assignment pay attention to how your group works.  How much time did you spend on various tasks?  How was the work divided?  What went well?  What could have been done better, and more efficiently?

Graph Contest: I will award two extra points to the worst example of graphing you find in a published source.  Entries will be judged by an independent judge and based on chart junk, deception, and lack of information.
