Undergraduate Oral English Skills Courses

Undergraduate ELS courses are college-level courses designed to strengthen students’ skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, enabling students to succeed in all other academic coursework. To strengthen oral English skills, students whose first language is not English are encouraged to take ELS 312 and ELS 322.

 

ELS 312 Oral English Skills for the Public Sphere (3 credits, fall semester)

Focus on pronunciation, listening and speaking skills, and a variety of speaking projects with a special emphasis on speaking freely in academic and social situations. Students build fluency in English by completing pronunciation exercises, developing speaking and listening skills through various projects, and giving oral presentations. Students also expand their cross-cultural awareness by reflecting on differences between America and their countries. This course is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. This course is restricted to students whose first language is not English.

 

ELS 322 Oral English Skills for the Academic Sphere (3 credits, spring semester)

Focus on pronunciation, listening and speaking skills, and a variety of communicative projects with a special emphasis on oral presentation skills. Students build fluency in English by developing speaking and listening skills with an intensive focus on pronunciation. Students strengthen public speaking skills by giving oral presentations and by completing speaking projects on a variety of academic topics. Students also expand their cross-cultural awareness by reflecting on differences between America and their countries. This course is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. This course is restricted to students whose first language is not English.
