Undergraduate Writing Courses
Undergraduate ELS courses are college-level courses designed to strengthen students’ skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, enabling students to succeed in all other academic coursework. To strengthen writing skills, students whose first language is not English are encouraged to take ELS 112 and ELS 122.
 
NOTE: Students may take both ELS 112 and 122 to fulfill the six-credit requirement in English Communication/Writing for General Education.
 
ELS 112 Expository Writing in English (3 credits, fall semester)
Focus on varieties and strategies of expository writing for different audiences and situations. Students will improve their proficiency in the English language by developing effective styles of writing paragraphs and essays, culminating in a final research project. They will also expand their understanding of grammatical structures, develop critical thinking skills, and formulate arguments through selected readings and discussion. Individualized work with a tutor at the Writing Center and regular appointments with the instructor are strongly recommended.
This course is restricted to students whose first language is not English and is accepted for General Education (ECw) credit.
 
ELS 122 Academic Writing in English (3 credits, spring semester)
Designed to improve students’ skills in essay structure and college-level writing and will focus on practice writing assignments for introductory and general education courses across the curriculum. Students will improve their proficiency in the English language by expanding their vocabulary, developing critical thinking skills, and analyzing arguments through selected readings and discussion. Individualized work with a tutor at the Writing Center and regular appointments with the instructor are strongly recommended.
This course is restricted to students whose first language is not English and is accepted for General Education (ECw) credit.
