ENGLISH MAJOR: DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS AS OF FALL 2006


● A minimum of 36 credits (maximum of 51 credits) in English, 18 credits of which must be at the 300 level or above

● All English majors must have taken two introductory courses (6 credits); one course in each of five historical periods (15 credits); and five elective courses selected from the department’s offerings. Students may choose to structure their major around an optional focus area.

● No course may be used to fulfill more than one requirement.


Every English major must take the following two Introductory Courses, ideally in the freshman or sophomore year:
