Essay 1: REVISION
Due: November 17 (Absolute Deadline)

OVERVIEW

Your goal here is to revise your first essay both in terms of form and content. The objective is to give you an opportunity to revisit your writing and to improve it, regardless of what grade you earned on the initial essay. It is common in literature courses not merely to read a poem, but to re-read it several times. The logic guiding this particular assignment is that your own writing deserves the same attention. Revisiting your own writing will enable you to isolate both your powers and limitations as a writer and to strengthen both. Take this time and work carefully with your own words.

Form refers to the stylistics of your essay: smooth and elegant prose; grammatical correctness; and proper MLA format.

Content refers to the substance of your essay: articulation of a thesis argument; making cogent claims supported by textual evidence; analyzing those pieces of evidence with care and an eye both for the complexities of language and the bearing of those complexities on your particular argument; and clear logical progression of your argument from beginning to end.

GUIDELINES

1. Read the marginal commentary I have appended to your essay carefully. Make sure you understand this commentary. If you wish to discuss issues of form or content, make an appointment to meet with me. Note: If you did not receive formalized commentary, you MUST visit me in office hours to discuss your essay before you revise it. NO EXCEPTIONS.

2. Rewrite your essay.

3. Include a short letter highlighting what you feel you accomplished in your revision. Submit this letter, along with BOTH the revised and the original essays. (Paperclip the original essay to the revised essay—do not staple them together.)
