Following completion of a dissertation on the relationship between documentary filmmaking and the Hollywood cinema during the 1930s, Dana Benelli received a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has taught at Carleton College, Clark University, Yale, Illinois State University, Tulane and Notre Dame, offering courses on film theory, film analysis, documentary film and television, film noir, Hitchcock and the New Wave, Japanese cinema, American film history, world film history, and non-western cinema. He has written articles and delivered conference presentations on King Kong, Werner Herzog, Innocence Unprotected, and Chinatown. His writing has been published in SubStance, Visual Anthropology, International Documentary, Movietone News and in the anthologies The Films of Werner Herzog: Between Mirage and History and Virtual Voyages: Cinema and Travel.
