An Evening with Albert Ibbotson-Industry Post-Production

Albert Ibbotson is currently an audio post supervisor working in Hollywood. He worked on numerous TV shows, such as Dallas and Knots Landing. Albert continued working on features, television and commercials, amassing credits for shows like: Dawson's Creek, Walker Texas Ranger, Mad About You, Nash Bridges, and more. Collecting accolades like 13 MPSE Golden Reel Award nominations, 2 Primetime Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe award, for The Shield, and a Golden Lion award at Cannes, for commercial work for Nike. Albert has works on permanent display at New York's MoMA, in the TV exhibit. Currently working in Hollywood, Albert supervises audio post for several TV shows, like Burn Notice, Mental, and White Collar.



Kinderblock 66: Film and Q&A with Rob Cohen

Kinderblock 66 is the story of four men who, as young boys, were imprisoned by the Nazis in the notorious Buchenwald concentration camp and who, sixty-five years later, return to commemorate the sixty-fifth anniversary of their liberation. The film tells the story of the effort undertaken by the camp's Communist-led underground to protect ad save Jewish children who were arriving in Buchenwald toward the end of the Holocaust. Kinderblock 66 also tells the story of Antonin Kalina, the head of the block who was personally responsible for saving 904 boys in Buchenwald. This fascinating documentary was directed by URI Film/Media instructor Rob Cohen. Visit the film's website.




Fatigued Premiere

A short documentary from URI Film/Media alumni Kyle King about life deployed to Afghanistan. Filmed between March-September 2012, Fatigued is a realistic story of what life is like for US Troops, ISAF coalition partners and civilian contractors living on the biggest airbase in Afghanistan supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Coffee With...Steven Feinberg: Conversation on the Business of Film

Join Film/Media students and faculty at Coffee & Conversation on the Business Side of Film with Steven Feinberg (screenwriter and Director of the RI Film and TV Office). Steven Feinberg started making movies in his Cranston, Rhode Island basement when he was eight years old. In his teens, he dreamed about going out to California to pursue movie-making on a larger scale, and at 18 that's exactly what he did, traveling across the country to attend the USC School of Cinema. He has since been able to cultivate a successful career as a writer and producer in Los Angeles; starting his own production company, writing a number of films, and working on a few television programs that are close to production.




Gut Renovation: Film and Q&A with Su Friedrich

Please join us on Tuesday April 2nd, 5 pm, Swan Auditorium for a screening of Internationally renowned filmmaker Su Friedrich's latest film: Gut Renovation. The film will be followed by a presentation by urban political theorist Serena Kataoka, and a Q and A. Sponsored by the English Department, Gender and Women's Studies, Film/Media, URI Urban Studies Program and the Center for Urban Studies and Research. Filmmaker Magazine says, "Friedrich, who has been practicing her potent brand of first-person documentary since the late 70s, has at last made a film essay that is of a piece with the work of heady French names like Godard and Varda."

Cast & Crew Connections is an event hosted by the Harrington Rangers in hopes to inspire collaboration among students, faculty, and the community from a variety of different departments and backgrounds. At the event, film students can pitch their movie ideas, actors/actresses can hand in their head-shots, and students can gain opportunities working with an advanced production students. There will be different stations set up to give information, as well as stations set up to gather information to help build a network for further references. Join us for an evening of networking, collaboration, fun, and desserts. Help us unite artistic students and aspiring professionals to increase collaboration and turn ideas into reality. It is an experience that will go beyond February 28th. This is your chance to be a part of something bigger. You can see the promo video here.




I'll Be Seeing You Screening

Park Theater (848 Park Ave. Cranston, RI)


Students Ryan Casey, Allie Furlong, Kayla Chin and Josh Ducharme will be screening their short film. Set in the 1930's, I'll Be Seeing You follows Charlie as he is sent back to the year 1933 after a bump on the head. Charlie soon falls under the sway of the swinging 30's, and witnesses the effect of the prohibition. Alongside is his youthful grandfather who must answer to the head Boss, Johnny "The Knife," or risk a slide into obscurity. He is also joined by Rita, the new night club singer, with her vivacious and good-humored nature, who answers to no one. Charlie will go through more twists and turns than the young dancers of the Great Depression Era. You can see Ryan's interview on The Rhode Show here.




SEC Presents Norman Reedus

This event will be moderated by Film/Media faculty Keith Brown (who has been spending all his free time watching The Walking Dead). FLM 351: It's cool to shoot film! Screening

It's Cool To Shoot With Film is an intensive hands-on introduction to the art and craft of filmmaking using a 16mm camera, sound recorder (non-synchronous 16mm film equipment), and the Final Cut Pro editing system (digital non-linear editing). Students acquired basic camera, lighting, sound recording, and editing skills while planning, shooting, and editing several short film exercises. All projects in the class were be shot on some type of motion picture film, either 16mm or Super 8mm!

Ashish Avikunthak is an experimental filmaker who has been making films in India since the mid nineties. His films have been shown worldwide in film festivals, galleries and museums. He is now an Assistant Professor of Film/Media at the Harrington School of Communication & Media, University of Rhode Island.




Guest Screenwriter Carl Ellsworth

Carl Ellsworth, the screenwriter of the 2012 film Red Dawn, visited URI and spoke about his experiences with screenwriting and working within the studio system. In addition to writing Red Dawn, Ellsworth has also written the screenplays for Disturbia (2007) and Red Eye (2005). Students were invited to see his new film Red Dawn accompanied by Ellsworth at a local theater in RI.

Die Hard Screening

Directed by John McTiernan (1988)
Run time: 131 minutes

In preparation for our guest speaker, screenwriter Carl Ellsworth, the Film department arranged a screening of the film Die Hard as he will be using it as a focus during his discussion on efficient character develpment and the structure of a screenplay.



Big Easy Express Screening

Directed by Emmett Malloy (2012)
Run time: 67 minutes

The documentary, Big Easy Express, follows three folk bands as they travel together by train from San Fransisco to New Orleans stopping in six different cities to perform. Part road movie, part concert film, Big Easy Express features live music from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Mumford and Sons and Old Crow Medicine Show.

Party Like it's a Verb Screening

Directed by Rob Peyrebrune

Party Like It's a Verb is a character-based feature comedy about a guy who is not the ambassador to Italy, a girl who is not buying his act, and the value of small victories over life's disappointments. The director and producers held a Q&A session following the film.



Guest Speaker Libby Segal

As a part of the FLM 351/352 iPhone classes, Libby Segal (URI Alumni, Class of 2010) visited URI to discuss how new mobile technologies such as the Flip camera, the iPhone 4s and DSLR cameras have changed the way we think about making films. Libby also screened a few of her own short films throughout the discussion.



Pie Heaven Screening

Aviv Rubinstien held a Q&A following the screening of the short film about two best friends, Ben and Emily, who engage in a competition over who can truly please a woman better. If Emily wins, Ben has to pay her rent for six months. If Ben wins, Emily must sleep with him.



Student Film Screening and Q&A


A collection of short films made by current and past student screened for the Introduction course of film production. The filmmakers were on hand for a brief Q&A after the screening.

Featuring work by Roger Bacon, Colby Blanchet, Matt DiGennaro, Kyle King, Dan Lennon, Austin McBurney, Lindsey Poole, Gene Rosati Jr., Chris Smith, and Jenna Sadowski.





Guest Screenwriter Chris Sparling

Actor-Director-Producer and writer Chris Sparling visited URI to speak about writing his claustrophobic film, Buried (2010). In the film, an American truck driver in Iraq, is buried alive in a coffin. Sparling's discussion focused a lot on the challenges he faced writing an engaging script with only one character, one location and a few props (flashlight, knife and mobile phone).

Matt DiGennaro's film This is a Love Story has been accepted into the 2013 international "Let's All Be Free" Film Festival in London, England. The short film will screen this April. This is a Love Story previously premiered as an official selection of the 2012 Rhode Island International Film Festival.

Ashton Avila's film Needless Wait has been accepted into the 2013 Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival. In addition to the film's screening, Ashton has been invited to attent The Filmmaker Workshops hosted by the Women of Warner Bros. Watch the trailer on youtube!

Two teams of URI students participated in the 48 Hour Film Festival in Providence this summer.

Roger Bacon, Gene Rosati Jr., Allie Furlong, Kayla Chin, Colby Blanchet and Chris Smith made up the team, Tough All Over, that won Best Editing at the 48 Hour Film Festival for their film The Greatness. See the trailer on Vimeo. (password: greatness)

The URI Film Collaborative, made up of students, Daniel Larsh, Anna Salatto, Brittany Diamond, Dan Matteus, Isabelle Motley, Mecca Smith and Alex Papa produced 2 Pounds for the 48 Hour Film Festival.

Film/Media students Kayla Chin, Roger Bacon, Gene Rosati Jr., Allie Furlong, Matt DiGennaro, along with faculty member Keith Brown, filmed a documentary about free dental care in Rhode Island for the Rhode Island Mission of Mercy. You can watch the film on YouTube.

Film/Media alumni, Libby Segal's, Hobby Hoarder project makes the news in Boston, MA and Providence, RI. Check out the clip on AOL.
