Hispanic Stereotypes in Fiction and Film
Professor Manteiga

Meets Wednesdays from 4-6:45 in Independence 308

This course will examine four major groups of Hispanic-Americans from a historical/social/cultural perspective, comparing and contrasting the reality of their situation with the stereotypes that have been projected through fiction and film. The four major Hispanic groups to be studied include the Mexican-Americans of the Borderland region (the Southwest), the Chicanos from the East Los Angeles area, the Puertorriqueˆ±os of the Northeast (NYC), and the Cubano-Americanos (Florida).

Novels will include:

Oscar Acosta, Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo
Oscar Hijuelos, The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love
Danny Santiago, Famous All Over Town
Piri Thomas, Down These Mean Streets

Films will include:

The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez
Born in East LA
Havana
The Mambo Kings
Scarface
West Side Story
Zoot Suit
