HPR105F Understanding the Feature Film
Through the screening of feature films and film clips, the course will
explore the historical, cultural, and aesthetic contributions of the cinema.
In addition, the process of filmmaking will be examined, and film and video
techniques will be explained and demonstrated. When possible, students
may have the opportunity to meet with professionals related to the film/video
industry. Also, students will have the option to create their own moving
images. Films such as: A Trip To The Moon; The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari;
Citizen Kane; Double Indemnity; The Graduate; Annie Hall; Wall Street,
Bulworth, Run, Lola, Run; and others will be shown, as well as clips from
numerous films. This course can be substituted for FLM 101 to satisfy the
Film Studies requirement for the minor. For more information contact the

HPR311H Masculinity in American Cinema
An exploration of the development, meaning, and impact of
male images in American cinema. Through the screening and analysis
of feature films, the course will explore the dialogue, behavior, and visual
presentation of male film characters portrayed by John Wayne, Woody Allen,
Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando, Tom Cruise, and other male film actors.
Emphasis will be on the impact of those images on our concepts of masculinity,
the male "hero," male-female relationships, and other relevant issues.
The male image will be discussed in relationship to film genres, such as
film noir, the western, and the comedy. Examples of male film types,
such as the cowboy, the rebel, the lover, and the killer will be explored.
Films film clips shown in class will include most of the following: High
Noon; The Man who Shot Liberty Valance; The Quiet Man; Rio Bravo;
Only Angels Have Wings; Pillow Talk; Duel; Play It Again, Sam; Manhattan;
Husbands & Wives; Deconstructing Harry; The Deer Hunter; Mean Streets;
Dirty Harry; Tootsie; The Crying Game; Glengarry, Glen Ross; Fight Club;
American Beauty; Eyes Wide Shut, and others. For more information contact
