Robert C. Manteiga
(Ph.D., University of Virginia) is Professor of Hispanic Studies and
Comparative Literature of the University of Rhode Island and directs
the Comparative Literature Studies Program and the Spanish International
Engineering Program. Professor Manteiga earned his doctorate in Spanish
from the University of Virginia. He is a published scholar in the
fields of 20th Century Spanish and Comparative Literatures, and has served
as editor/consultant for several literary journals, including Modern Language
Studies and CHOICE. His research interests include Spanish experimental
theater, women's narrative, 20th Century poetry, and the Spanish Avant-Garde. He has taught several Spanish film courses including the Films of Carlos
Saura and Hispanic Stereotypes in Fiction and Film.

This course will examine four major groups of Hispanic-Americans from a historical/social/cultural perspective, comparing and contrasting the reality of their situation with the stereotypes that have been projected through fiction and film. The four major Hispanic groups to be studied include the Mexican-Americans of the Borderland region (the Southwest), the Chicanos from the East Los Angeles area, the Puertorriqueˆ±os of the Northeast (NYC), and the Cubano-Americanos (Florida).
