Dear Colleagues:
The longer days of Spring 2013 semester are helping brighten the mood here on campus, as students and faculty await the flowers and blooms that are beginning to signal the earth's renewal.
We're doing plenty of renewal of our own, with new courses, new programs and activities, and new opportunities springing up all over. I was especially proud of the student leadership demonstrated by the Harrington Rangers, who created Cast and Crew Connections on February 28th, an event to engage students from across the University in collaborating with the many Film/Media students now producing their short films.
Putting students and media professionals together just makes sense. This spring, students are helping to create an online community to support Rhode Island libraries. Writing and Rhetoric instructor Frank Romanelli is working with Harrington School students in collaboration with former Providence Journal reporter Brian Jones to develop the RhodeIslandLibraryReport.com.
And faculty and students were thrilled to meet nearly 70 media professionals, librarians and technology entrepreneurs who came to campus on January 16 - 17 for the "Convergence and Community" invitational conference. We learned how programs in Journalism and Library and Information Studies can develop fresh synergy in preparing future workers as information managers and content creators for jobs in the fast-growing global digital economy.
Happy Spring!
