Advising
New students are advised at University College in Roosevelt Hall, which is your administrative home until you are eligible for the College of Arts & Sciences, home of the Journalism Department. You can make an advising appointment online, by calling 874-2993 or stopping by the reception desk at University College.
As a freshman, you are required to consult with your UC advisor before you will be allowed to register for classes. Because the Journalism Department requires its majors to consult their advisor prior to registering for Journalism classes, you will continue to meet with that advisor until you move to A&S.
Once you have 24 credits and have passed JOR 115 and have passed JOR 220 with a grade of C or better and have a grade point average of at least 2.00, you will be transferred to A&S. At that time, the Journalism Department will assign you a faculty advisor from the department. You can request a specific person if you wish; you also can change advisors at any time by conferring with the department chair. A list of advisors and their advisees is online.
We urge you to work closely with your advisor in choosing not only the specific Journalism courses that meet your needs or professional interests, but other courses as well. We also urge you to explore the array of offerings in departments across the university. Look through the Undergraduate Bulletin's listings; we bet you will find more courses of interest than you will be able to take before you graduate.
Your advisor can offer more than academic advice. If you have questions about university or department policies and procedures, if you are in search of career information, if you have a problem related to academics or affecting your academic performance, your advisor is a good person to start with. If she/he does not have an answer for you, she/he certainly can point you in the right direction.
