Welcome to the

Department of Journalism

Part of the new Harrington School of Communication and Media

& the only degree-granting journalism program in Rhode Island! Journalism students

Discovering answers to the who, what, when, where, how and why of tomorrow through experience today.

Journalism students at the University of Rhode Island work collaboratively in our labs and studios with their classmates and their professors to produce news content in multi-media formats from traditional print stories to video for TV and online versions of both. Students also work in pairs or teams in classroom-based courses and complete off-campus reporting projects to enhance their learning and to prepare them for work in the increasingly complex news media.

"I consider myself among the luckiest of people, because journalism, when it's done well, is the proudest and most noble of professions."

ABC's Christiane Amanpour
URI Journalism Class of 1983

Journalism "skills courses" -- through individual and collaborative assignments -- focus on reporting, writing, editing and producing news. "Conceptual" courses provide students the intellectual foundation and framework necessary to be a responsible journalist. And through its General Education course offerings, the Department of Journalism provides non-majors a forum for studying the importance of journalism and the role of the mass media in society.
