Requirements of the
Public Relations Major

 

The major in Public Relations consists of 12 credits of pre-major courses, 15 credits of required courses and 18 credits of electives.

Acceptance into the major is by application only. Applicants must have a minimum QPA of 2.0 overall and 2.5 in the pre-major courses. Typically, the application period is in February. Based on QPA, only the top 25 applicants are admitted annually.

Pre-major courses
You must have completed (or be in the process of completing or have a plan for completing) the following courses when you apply for the major: COM 202 (101) -- Public Speaking, COM 210 -- Persuasion, JOR 220 -- Media Writing (with a C or better) and STA 220 or MTH 107.

Required courses
Everyone must complete all of the following: PRS 340 -- Public Relations, PRS 441 -- Public Relations Practices, PRS 491 -- Public Relations Internship (requires completion of PRS 340 and 441), COM 381 (306) -- Research Methods and JOR 341 -- Editing for Publication I.

Elective courses
Everyone must complete six elective courses, with at least one course from each category.
