S(t)imulation Schedule
- 11/13 - Staffs assigned
- Editors develop profile of paper, which will guide decision-making
- 11/20 - Editors review profiles with Luebke
- 11/20 - Luebke provides Budgets to News Editors
- Editors determine which stories to use (Page 1 and Inside news), how long each will be, and the headline specifications for each. (Each staff member must handle a minimum of four stories)
- 11/25 - Editors orient staffs
- 12/2, 12/4 &12/9 - In class: staff members edit stories per instructions and write headlines.
- Desk chief and Assistant Desk Chief will assign stories (one at a time per person) for editing
- Finished work goes to Desk Chief
- Desk chief and assistant "read back" stories and headlines as they are finished. Return to staff member for more work if necessary.
- "Read back" means checking work of copy editor to ensure accuracy, completeness and quality of story; correcting errors that copy editor missed; returning story or headline to copy editor for more work if you find serious problems with either.
- Desk chief gives final OK to story
- News editor gives final OK to headline
- 12/11 - (9 a.m.) News editors turns in Profile, Story Logs, edited stories with headlines and cutlines
- 12/15 - News editor, desk chief, assistant desk chief present newspaper to class (15 minutes maximum)
- 12/15 - "Post-publication" critique of papers by guest editor, including but not limited to:
- Commentary on profiles
- How well Page 1 news selections serve readers
- How well Inside news selections serve readers
- Quality of headlines
- Quality of editing
