Browser recommendations:
I recommend Internet Explorer 5 and above or Netscape 4.75 or 4.78.
Netscape 6 and above have problems with the QuickTime plug-in.
Netscape 4.79 for Windows 98/2000 and Netscape 4.6and 4.7 for the Mac are available from the URI ftp site .
If you have a Windows computer, click on the ftp link above, open the ibm folder and select win9x/ . Open the Netscape/ folder and select n47.exe.
If you have a Macintosh, open the Mac folder and select *Netscape/ folder. Select 4.7 with 128-bit encryption.sit
Why files won't open:
1. Have you installed a new browser after you installed QuickTime?
Internet Explorer downloads will effectively corrupt the QuickTime player. After installing any new version of Explorer you will need to re-install QuickTime.
2. What version of QuickTime are you using?
An older QT player may not open these files. Most of the VLL files were created with QuickTime 5 and 6.
Although created in QuickTime, the Russian files for the Golosa textbook were saved as MP3 files and should open in any MP3 player you have on your computer. If they don't work with your MP3 player, download QT.
3. Are you using the correct password?
Passwords are available from your instructor or you may get them at the lab.
4. Did you install QuickTime after it was downloaded?
QuickTime does not install automatically. After downloading the file, you have to install the program and use the set-up assistant.
5. Does your computer give you the option to Select Application ?
If so browse until you find the QuickTime Player , click OK or Select . This creates a default for that file only, you will have to select for each audio file.
Files (.mov) open in software other than QuickTime:
If your files are opening in a plug-in or software program other than QuickTime, they might not play correctly or they might not play at all. Any of the following may occur:
- A broken puzzle piece icon will appear.
- The browser will crash.
- A blank image will appear.
- Error messages will pop up.
- A pop-up box will appear prompting the viewer to save the file.
- A pop-up box will appear prompting the viewer to choose an application with which to play the file.
To resolve this issue, you will have to reinstall QuickTime.
Saving the QuickTime files:
If you want to save the audio files for later use, they must be saved individually. To do so:
1. Open each file and allow it to finish downloading.
2. Click on the down-facing arrow (the last icon) in the QuickTime taskbar (on the bottom of the player).
3. Select Save as QuickTime Movie .
4. Type in the folder/directory where you want your computer to store it.
5. To play these files, open the QuickTime Player. Under the File pull-down menu, select OpenMovie . Select the audio file from the location where you saved it.
Please note: Some publishers will not give permission to download these files, so not all files will be available for download as source.
