Language Learning Resource Center
Spanish Placement Exam

The Spanish Placement Exam is a computerized exam which takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes.  The exam is available only in the Language Learning Resource Center (LLRC), 301 Independence Hall on Upper College Road.  The hours of operation for the LLRC are listed on the main LLRC web page.

Before you begin the Spanish Placement Exam, you will be required to answer some basic questions about your experience with the Spanish Language.  The exam is a multiple choice test drawn from a question bank.  You may change your response as many times as necessary until you select the "Confirm Response" option.  Once this option has been selected, the program will "draw" another question from the test bank--a more difficult question if your response was correct or an easier question if your response was incorrect.

Upon completion of the exam, the program will automatically tally your responses and display your score.  This score can then be compared with a chart that correlates the scores to course offerings (for example, a score of 185 would rate a placement in Spanish 102).  A score above 350 when paired with a successful completion of an oral interview with a Spanish professor, offers the option of "testing out"* of the language requirement at URI or enrolling in a 200 level course (such as Spanish 205).

PLEASE NOTE: If you choose to test out of  the language requirement, you do not receive the credits for taking the classes--you simply are not required to take them and may choose to use those credits for another course instead.

There are also 6-credit incentives for students who have successfully completed Spanish language courses in high school and score high enough for advance placement in Spanish 104 or 205.   Please contact the Modern Languages Department for more information about this program (sometimes referred to as the carrot program).
