Geeky Girl

Rachel Barrett

LSC 508, Fall 2003

Well, let's see...where to begin! Well, for starters, this is my first semester at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Library and Information Studies . Thus far, things have been going very well! I really really like my classes, ESPECIALLY MY LSC 508 class!! Whoa, who could ask for anything more! Okay, okay, enough of my gratuitous brown-nosing.

I commute to URI two days a week from Duxbury, MA , where I grew up. Even though I live there, I've I spend minimal time in Duxbury because for most of the semester I've been commuting between URI and the two jobs I work at part-time, one at the American Red Cross , and the other at the Hayden Library at Tabor Academy . I've recently left the Red Cross, so even though I'll fit the definition of a starving student to a tee, at least I'll have more free time!

This schedule has left me very little time for a social life, which, sad to say, centers mostly around my cat, Pig Pen. Yes, she is a girl, and yes, her name is Pig Pen. My goofy boyfriend, Jeff, gave her that name and has refused to acknowledge any of my attempts to give her a more appropriate name.

My cat, Pig Pen, and Jeff's dog, Krammer!!Aren't they cute!

Because of my busy schedule, I don't get to spend much time with my friends either. This is a picture of me and my friend Emilys at a mini Thanksgiving I had at my boyfriend's apartment:

Don't get me wrong...I do get to have fun! Here is a picture of me and my boyfriend at a halloween party! We dressed up as white trash and won the award for house favorite. Our trophy was a bottle of Arbor Mist!! How suitable!

I went to University of Massachusetts/Amherst for my undergraduate degree in Anthropology and History. While there, I worked part time one school year at the W.E.B. DuBois Library , which got my curiosity peaked about making a career of it. So now I'm pursuing that after two years of working full time at the American Red Cross in New Bedford, MA as the Program Manager of Health and Safety Services. I coordinated First Aid and CPR classes for the 10 towns we serve (Dartmouth, New Bedford, Acushnet, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Marion, Wareham, Rochester and Gosnold), and taught a whole bunch... I'm pursuing both my M.L.I.S and my MA in History , which has been pretty demanding, but I hope to attend school year round and finish in a relatively reasonable time frame. I'd like to work in a public library, although as of yet I have no direct experience in that area.

Let's see, what else is there...Well, I come from a very large family. Nine kids, and I'm right in the middle. Most of them are out of the house now, either being grown-ups like I someday hope to be, or in college. Right now, including myself, there are 5 people in school!! Yikes! Speaking of college, my sister, Alexis, had to do a similar project as this one last year, and she designed a web-page completely in html. It is really really silly, and you should take a look at it, here is the link ...

As you can see, I am a little link happy. It is one of those things where once you learn how to do something, you're so proud of it, that you want to do it over and over again...So here is just a small list of links that I like that I couldn't incorporate into my biography.

The Library of Congress American Memory Page
Historical Collections for the National Digital Library...lots of neat stuff for history geeks like myself.

The Historical Text Archive
Got some pretty neat history stuff on it as well.

Webmonkey
Taught me most of the HTML I'm using right now!!

ALA
American Library Association's website!!
