Course Work for Ellen Basso

Ellen Basso LSC 508, Summer 2005

Course Work

This website was created by Ellen Basso as a required by Professor Herb Carson for LSC508. As an internet based course, the website was one method of handing in course work. The course work can be linked to from the sidebar or from the links available right in the next sentence. The course assignments included a website, annotations, a database report, and a theory project.

Information Science and Technology introduces library students to computer skills that are essential to librarians.

Website Notes

This homepage was designed to demonstrate website design skills I learned in LSC508. For example, this website uses frames to keep the sidebar open as users navigate to each of the links available. Also, the homepage uses tables to format my name and the course on the line above the black bar. Tables are also used to separate the home page into the 'Course Work' and 'Website Report' sections. Additionally, the graphic at the top of the sidebar is a link to LSC508 that includes an alt message when the curser is left on the image.

Although not visible to the user, CSS files were used in the database, annotation, and home pages to format the fonts and indentation of the paragraphs and headings. CSS files conveniently allow the programmer to modify formats in one place that will take affect everywhere the CSS id is used saving lots of time as the website evolves. Of particular note is that the CSS file was used to provide the hanging indent for the APA style citations on the annotation page.

Navigation through websites is an important factor so "Back to Home" links are included on each web page. And the sidebar is always available so users can navigate to other sections of the website.

This website was also tested by Watchfire WEBXACT or Bobby as it is sometimes called. After testing, metatags were added for the author, description, and keywords which were found to be missing. Also, the lang identifier was added to the HTML tag to specify that this website uses english. Bobby also recommended printing the page to make sure that the use of the color navy was still visible. Since it was, I chose to keep the color. As noted by Bobby, an alt message was added to the image at the left. Finally, a FRAME title and longdesc were added.

As a former software engineer (10+ years ago) turned household engineer (the cool name for stay-at-home moms), I have really enjoyed dabbling in "programming" again. I hope to use these skills in my future endeavor as a school media specialist, and maybe even with my Girl Scout troop this coming year.
