Database Assignment LSC 508
July 3, 2005
Linda Cunha

The Microsoft Access program was selected for the ability to build tables, and once the table is built, Microsoft Access will build a form from that table. The creation of this database is needed to manage the storage of 8,750 annotations from 625 LSC 508 students from 2005 to 2010.
The database will be a tool for both the teacher and the students in the LSC 508 classes for the nest five years. Annotation information can be sorted by the studentís name, by assignment number, by the professional journal, or by the weekly lesson topic.
The layout of the form follows the APA style with the annotation number first, followed by spacing for three authors, the date, article title, the journal, volume, issue, and page numbers, the annotation of 50 words or less, the weekly lesson topic, and the studentís name.
After ten years it will take up approximately 750Mb:
  • 5 years
  • x1 class
  • x 25 students x
  • 10 annotations for summer classes,

    plus

  • 5 years
  • x4 classes
  • x 25 students
  • x15 annotations for fall/spring semesters

    equals

8750 total annotations to be entered,
x approximately 571 bytes of information per entry.)
This is just a little too much for a writeable CD to hold, but the computer itself should be able to store and manipulate it.
  • A password protected system will allow only the person authorized to make changes to do so, thus providing security on the database.
