Description of the Situation

The LSC 508 annotations assignment is getting overwhelming for Professor Carson. For each student within each class for every semester, he collects a minimum of 10 to 15 annotations. Dr. Carson wants a database program developed to manage the information, as well as, use as a reference for future research.

The Original Form

Presently, he has required his students to email him the annotation using the APA style.

The APA requirement for a journal with one author is:
Maki, R.H. (1982). Categorization effects that occur in comparative judgment tasks.
Memory & Cognition, 10, 19-23.

The APA requirement for a journal with multiple authors is:
Atkinson, R.C., & Shiffrin, R.M. (1971). The control of short-term
memory. Scientific American, 225, 82-90.

The APA requirement for a journal with found in a database is:
Jacobson, J.W., Mulick, J.A., & Schwartz, A.A. (1995). A history of facilitated communication: Science,
pseudoscience, and antiscience. American Psychologist, 50, 750-765. Retrieved January 12, 2001, from PsycARTICLES database.

Sample citations where borrowed from http://library.osu.edu/sites/guides/apagd.html#swd

Other than using this style, he does not have a particular hard-copy form that students must accompany with each annotation. Since his hard drive is full of annotations and the plan is to teach this class for five more years, this database will organize the data, allow him to sort by a particular topic, and quickly reference all annotations written by his past students.

Size of File

Estimated size of the database:
Maximum size of each record: 1278 bytes
Total number of students in a class: 25 students

Total number of classes Dr. Carson teaches in fall/spring semesters: 4 classes
Number of annotations for the fall/spring classes: 15 each semester
Total number of annotations for the fall/Spring semesters: (25 * 15 * 4) 1500

Total number of classes Dr. Carson teaches in summer semester: 2 classes
Number of annotations for the summer classes: 10 each semester
Total number of annotations for the summer semester: (25 * 10 * 2) 500

Total number of annotations in a year: (1500 + 500) 2000

Maximum size of file in 5 years: (1278 * 2000) 2556000 bytes or 2.6 MB

The computers used for this database will have a minimum of 60 GB hard drive and 256 MB RAM. Therefore, the computer will have the capacity to process and store the data.

Security of the Database

The database will be set up on the computers within the GSLIS program building. Dr. Carson or a graduate assistant will enter all the data entries. The program is set up to enter the password BOOKS. The assistant, Dr. Carson, and I have access to the password.
