Managing Information

in the Information Age

A good information system reaches all areas of an organization.

Information management utilizes many forms of technology. Today's technology allows the simultaneous use of resources, the access to multiple databases, and is able to refine and analyze information in a collaborative environment.

Since the 90's, many products have been developed to meet the information needs of various organizations. As need continues to grow, products continue to improve their ability to serve the ever demanding needs of information management.

Organizations who utilize IMS need to capture information, organize it and make it easily accessible to users. Therefore, IMS must do the following:

  1. Gather - IMS provides a means to gather information for such functions as e-mail, intranet pages, shared databases, and external web sites.
  2. Accept Information - IMS allows information to be added easily by administrators and other users.
  3. Organize - IMS organizes information in a way that can be understood by users.
  4. Deliver - IMS enables users to find information from many sources, quickly and easily.
  5. Interact - IMS allows users to send messages to each other, share documents and contribute to discussions.
