APPLICATION IN THE LIBRARY
While interviewing various librarians we found that most had never
heard of this theory. Staff did not knowingly use a particular theory
to base their operation on. Due to the subjectivity of this model;
opinions as to where evidence of its existence can be difficult to
pinpoint. Based on the fact that Taylorıs Value-Added Process model
enhances a product or service to promote performance and usability to
ensure a long term client satisfaction; it is evident this model is
used throughout public libraries internationally. Through mission
statements alone, one can easily see the overall goal of a public
library is to provide its users with the tools they request as well
as the knowledge and access to use these tools to their potential.
Within public libraries one does not have to hunt long to find the
evidence of quantifiable value. In examing public libraries we looked
for both tangible as well as intangible evidence of Taylorıs Value-
Added Process.
REFERENCE:
The organization of most reference sections is based on the ease
of use with commonly requested materials. Many libraries have specialty
areas of reference such as local history, genealogy, etc. Often times
these collections are situated as well as maintained to aid the patron.
From strategically placed books to even the simple aids of signage,
Taylorıs model can be seen in use.
Since this model is user driven; one can analyze the success of added
value by examining the userıs success.
CHILDRENıS/ YOUNG ADULT:
Within the childrenıs section providing help for the young patron is
critical. This is accomplished according to the model through mediation
(direct help) and Orientation (formal teaching). Some examples are
pathfinders, bibliographies, computer instruction, etc. These elements
of Taylorıs model save great amounts of time for both the patron as
well as the staff.
ACQUISITIONS:
The elements of a well-rounded selection process such as accuracy,
comprehensiveness, currency, and cost effectiveness, are in keeping
with all that is represented in Taylorıs theory. The success in using
these criteria well can have a positive dominoes effect throughout the
library and hence contribute to patron satisfaction.
