LSC 508
INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Spring 2008
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction
Welcome to LSC 508!
This course is designed to introduce you to basic information science theory and provide you with skills using various forms of information technology.
Expected prerequisite knowledge:
VERY IMPORTANT: Please go to the site containing the Required Technology Competencies for Students Entering the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies . Look the competencies over carefully. If you do not possess the basic competencies listed, either use the time before this course begins to gain the necessary skills or plan to take the class in a future semester after you have gained the necessary competencies. Especially important is a basic knowledge of a data base program such as MicroSoft Access, FileMaker Pro or the data base program in MicroSoft Works. This course can be taken without having a basic knowledge of one of these data base programs, but you will have to spend time learning the software in addition to planning and designing the data base for one of the assignments. If you are unsure if you have the necessary prerequisite knowledge, please contact the instructor by phone or email.
WEBCT:
If you have used WebCT in another course and you are familiar with email
(receiving and sending individual and group messages, opening and sending
attachments, replying to messages, etc.), the discussion list (opening
and sending messages, opening and sending attachments, replying to messages,
etc.), chat, downloading files, and other basic functions of WebCT, most of the
first hour of the face-to-face session will be a review of
these features of WebCT. Most of the first hour of the face-to-face sessions will
be devoted to introducing members of the class who are unfamiliar with
WebCT to it. Please see the spring
2008 course listing for day, time and location of each of the face-to-face
sessions..
The second week through the last week of the class will be conducted online
on WebCT. Those of you who are familiar with WebCT may logon to Introduction to Information Science and Technology as soon it is available on WebCT (probably sometime in late December or early to mid January). Those of you who are not familiar with WebCT
may also logon to WebCT if you would like to try, but we will not begin
using WebCT for the course until after the face-to-face session meets on January 25, 2007 or January 26, 2007.
Following are instructions describing the logon procedure. Go to: http://www.uri.edu/webct/ and click on Log in to myWebCT
Your login ID is the same spelling as your e-Campus ID (in lowercase); your password is synchronized with your email password on the mail.uri.edu system. If you have not changed your email password, your default password is your birthdate in mmddyyyy format, such as 03021985.
- After you have changed your Password, select "Introduction to Information Science and Technology (2071-URIPS-LSC-508-SEC0...)" under your list of courses.
- Please logon onto WebCT and look at our site as soon as you have been entered into the system. If you haven't used WebCT before and want to wait until the face-to-face session, I will provide instruction on its use then. Again, contact me if you have any problem.
Read the Syllabus:
Please read the syllabus (to be posted by mid-August). If you have any questions, please contact me. If you haven't already emailed me, please do so now to tell me that you are taking the course.
