INTRODUCTION
TO INFORMATION
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Information Theory Project
You must join a group with no more than four and no less than three other members of the class. As a group, you must describe an information problem or issue in
a library or information center setting. Once you have described and defined
the problem or issue, select a communication or information science theory or model
that will be best to help solve the problem. You may use any of the theories
or models presented in this class or any others that you find on your own. A rough
draft describing your problem or issue, model or theory chosen to help
solve the problem, and brief rationale for your selection should be emailed
to me by 3/18/07.
You, along with the other members of your group, will become more familiar with the communication or information science theory or model and present the solution to your problem to the rest of the class using it. Your presentation should provide
- a detailed discussion the problem,
- a rational for selecting the theory or model,
- a description of the theory or model used,
- a discussion of the solution to the problem,
- an appropriate bibliography or list of references used, and
- any other information that you feel is appropriate.
The presentation will be displayed in the form of a web site. One member of the group will post the site on his or her site. Each other member of your group will provide a link from your personal website to the URL for your project by the date due.
Upon completion of the project (due by 4/8/07), each member of
the group should send an email to me with a grade for the participation
of each member of the group including yourself. The grade should be based
on 5 points where:
- 5=outstanding, contributions couldn't have been better,
- 4=very good, contributions were better than most,
- 3=acceptable, about average contributions,
- 2=below average, didn't contribute as much as most,
- 1=poor, contributed very little,
- 0=unacceptable, contributed nothing.
No one in the group will receive a grade for this assignment until all members of the group have submitted a grade using the above scale for all members of the group including herself or himself.
Following are links to partial bibliographies of sources of information
about other theories or models that you may want to consider for this
project.
Churchman's Systems Model
Miller's Living System Model
Debons' EATPUT Model
Yovit's Model
Samuelson's Model
